In a meeting of volunteers to discuss the state of local health care, the subject turned to changes in the NHS, and how rumours about them can spread. Their chairman said:
"You cannot help the jungle drums."
But when a member of the public who complained that the commonly-used phrase was racist, the speaker immediately apologised and carried on. Yet the incident has led to an official investigation, six months of wrangling, and a decision to bar the health group from meeting councillors.#
The row will soon come to a head when senior figures on Wiltshire Council, whose ruling Conservative group has been split by the affair, meet the leaders of the health care body to discuss the council's decision to uphold the complaint of racism.
