It Didn't Even Get to Penalties

England missed out on the right to host the 2018 World Cup after football's governing body Fifa picked Russia to stage the event for the first time.  What's even more surprising is that having been thought of as one of the favourites, they didn't even get past the first round of voting.

I personally don't feel England should have won as I think this huge cash cow tournament should be shared around the world and not always go to the "steady Eddies".  However, it must be bitterly disappointing to the bid team who were led to believe they were in with a good shout.

The whole system is corrupt and wrong- why "secret" ballots and smarmy back handers to octogenarians who can barely keep there trousers dry?  Be open and fair and ensure everyone has an equal playing field.  Are you listening Blatter?  The sooner he goes, the better.

That said, good luck to Russia and Qatar (2022)- they will no doubt make it very successful all round and we wish them well.

2018 VOTING

First round: England 2 votes (eliminated), Netherlands-Belgium 4; Spain-Portugal 7; Russia 9 (no absolute majority)

Second round: Netherlands-Belgium 2; Spain-Portugal 7; Russia 13 (Russia obtain absolute majority)
