Leaving Early- 10

David Caruso - NYPD Blue

How he left: When Shelley Long isn’t cited as the biggest fool who left a hit series too early, it’s because Caruso is. After one breakout season on TV’s hottest drama, NYPD Blue, David Caruso engaged in a series of bratty contract disputes, in which he demanded a major salary increase. Overvaluing his worth, he walked away from the show, and his character was unceremoniously transferred.

What happened next: Caruso was replaced by Jimmy Smits, who helped the show continue it’s ratings—and awards—domination. It took nearly ten years for Caruso to land another big role, as the lead on CSI: Miami.
