Permission Denied

Apparently Bagan requested NESCO heritage status due to its amazing collection of historical temples and pagodas. It was refused, as some of the conservation works did not use similar materials or traditional methods in restoration and it's quite noticeable in some buildings the disparity in old and new styles.

Either way, it is an utterly unique landscape you witness as you drive by thousands of these brick red shrines which at times out number the living quarters of the villagers. Fascinating and intriguing certainly, but why so many? I have no idea.
