Our first attempt to locate a typical Taiwanese beer began in failure as the bar we were in was Japanese and we were on Asahi. We've tried this before in Hong Kong and it's an OK beer, but not Taiwanese and at NT$ 110 a time, it's not that cheap either. It was even cheaper in HK (although that price was during Happy Hour) However, until we can find somewhere that serves the local brews, this is the entry into our Beer Guide for Taiwan.
And this is where the bar staff were brilliant. We explained that we have to try local beer and one of the guys who had just finished his shift disappeared for a short while. On his return, he had brought back to tins of Gold Medal from the off licence and they poured the into chilled glasses for us to taste.
It was miles better than the Japanese stuff and they were very happy at our opinion, but we can't put that into the guide as we don't know how much it cost!
