And they always get the best one.
A council parking boss whose Mercedes was towed by his own staff had the car returned to him after workers realised what they had done.
The man had left his SLK280 in a residents-only bay in the borough and although he had an all-zones permit which allows him to park anywhere in Hackney, it was not on show on the car's dashboard as is required. His vehicle was given a ticket by wardens for not having a permit, and then towed away.
The council have since claimed the wardens should have checked their database to make sure that the car's owner did not have a permit. Really? They do this in each and every case? Jolly good- we now have it in black and white.
The man was charged a £60 penalty, which he paid, but not the £260 that most people are required to pay for the towing fee, nor did he have to collect his car. Instead it was returned to where he had originally left it.
The council then admitted the chap had also missed the 14 day deadline to pay the ticket, meaning he should have been fined £120. He only had to hand over £60, as he had tried to pay earlier but “there had been a problem with the system”.
Preferential treatment? Oh aye, indeed.
