You need to practise this and even try and get comfortable with this so non-British custom. If you don't, trust me, you will pay the price. We were passing through the ever so touristy night market with our local guide and asked the price of an item on one of the stalls. They wanted $4 and we walked on as we were just fact finding. I'd have probably settled on $2 but Chan said that at his local market that identical souvenir would cost a native 5 000 Riel- around a dollar.
Go in hard, get your price and then pay a bit extra as a tip. A dollar to us is not a great deal but to these people it truly is. Go on, make some one happy for the day.
