George Clooney and Julianna Margulies -ER
How they left: When a show airs for 15 years, as ER did, it’s inevitable that it will have to say goodbye to some of its most beloved cast members. No two stars of the show catapulted to fame as quickly as George Clooney and Julianna Margulies did as the central couple, Dr. Doug Ross and nurse Carol Hathaway. Facing a promising film career, Clooney left after season five, with his character resigning and deciding to move to the Pacific northwest, sharing one last romantic, heartbreaking kiss with Margulies. Margulies, whose character was pregnant, stayed on for one more season before being moved by a patient to join Doug on the west coast—a ho-hum goodbye, before a surprise return appearance by Clooney in the closing scene.
What happened next: ER managed to run a full decade after the departures of its two stars. Clooney, it need not be said, fared well out of his scrubs. Margulies toiled in short-lived series and parts in B-movies before landing the award-winning role of Alicia on The Good Wife, currently one of the top-rated dramas on TV.
