First Generation - Friday Night Lights
Adrianne Palicki, Gaius Charles, Scott Porter
How they left: Friday Night Light is a remarkable series for many reasons: its authenticity, its resistance to veering into soap opera territory, its standard of acting. But it’s equally rare for actually graduating its teenage characters—and actors—out of high school, and off the show. When the first batch of original cast members left, it made for some incredibly touching moments. The always underestimated Tyra, played by Adrianne Palicki, defies the odds by getting into college, beaming an earnest pride as she spreads the news. Scott Porter’s wheelchair-bound Jason Street gets a nice arc with his slow realization that he can still be a father and career man despite his condition. Gaius Charles’s Smash Williams works like a dog to earn a walk-on spot on a college football team, and his mother’s joy at the news is heart-melting.
What happened next: Despite losing these fine actors, Friday Night Lights never wavered in quality in their absence—bolstered chiefly by the reliable work of leads Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. Post-FNL, Palicki just landed the part of Wonder Woman in next season’s buzzed-about superhero series. Porter is currently on The Good Wife, and Charles had a series of small roles in films like Salt and Takers.
