Leaving Early- 7

Anthony Edwards and Maura Tierney - ER

How they left: ER has sent-off a lot of actors. But for two who had some of the longest runs on the show, Anthony Edwards and Maura Tierney, it was extra painful to bid adieu. Coincidentally, their characters, Dr. Mark Green (180 episodes) and Abby Lockhart (189 episodes), had two of the most respectful, poignant goodbyes. Dr. Green’s battle with brain cancer made for a series of emotional moments. But when news reached the hospital that Green died on vacation in Hawaii, the supporting cast’s reaction was heartbreaking—befitting a character with such a legacy on the show. Lockhart’s send-off was—like her character—much more matter-of-fact, and for that reason just as sentimental. She simply walks out the ER’s sliding doors, flanked by her admiring colleagues.

What happened next: Edwards departed ER in 2002 and left the series in a bit of a creative rut. A few seasons later, when Tierney came into her own as the show’s central character, ER finished out its run to much critical acclaim. Neither actor has appeared in anything as major as the ER gig, though Tierney rebounded from a battle with breast cancer to star in a string of plays before booking a recurring role on Rescue Me and the lead in this season’s already-canceled drama The Whole Truth.
