UK's Potholes

With snow forecast over much of Britain today, the situation is made worse by cuts of up to 20% in road maintenance budgets.  A Local Government Association (LGA) spokesbot said town halls faced "incredibly difficult decisions" over which roads to repair and warned that some may not be fixed at all.

The number of potholes was expected to be even worse than last year's record levels, with the fluctuating temperatures of recent weeks being blamed.  Wet weather combined with freezing conditions destroys asphalt as ice seeps into the road, expands and the pressure splits the bitumen.

The AA urged drivers to take extra care as the "potent mixture of weather conditions" left them facing a "knife-edge situation".   Their spokesbot said:

"Many roads are on borrowed time and that is shortened when the weather is severe."

It's getting worse but there's nothing new in this- the councils simply ignore the disgraceful conditions (unless it's their own road) and simply bank the cash for compo payouts.  Where the health & safety campaigners when you really need them?
