Plod were under pressure last night to explain the £2 million cost of planting an undercover officer among green activists for seven years.
They were accused of "using a sledgehammer to crack a nut" as the trial of six protesters collapsed after the undercover cop allegedly switched sides. The case was then ditched after claims the officer, who spent years infiltrating climate campaign groups, had "turned native" and offered to help the defendants’ case.
Each undercover officer costs the taxpayer as much as £250 000 a year, so the bill for his work alone would therefore, be £1.75 million- then there’s the £400 000 cost of preparing for the failed trial.
And the Rozzers wonder why the public don't have much faith in them?
