Driving a convertible with the top down could expose you to dangerous noise levels on a par with a building site, claims a new study. Levels as high as 100 decibels were recorded at speeds of 75 mph which for long periods could lead to damage to hearing and even at 55 mph levels were above 85dB, the equivalent to a construction site.
Wifey used to have a fantastic MX-5 which she would use every day to commute to work. Rarely did the British summer allow for the top down driving for sustained periods of time on the motorway and in and around town, the speed limit is a mere 30 mph. Yet another fine example of scaremongering, in my opinion.
Wind noise is a killer on the hearing though which is why riding with a top quality helmet is necessary on a bike. While most helmet laws pass safety tests easily enough, the extra pennies go toward lighter materials, better ventilation and noise reduction. However, even with a £500 lid I would never ride at motorway speeds without ear plugs.
So, if you are alarmed at the latest study, pop in some plugs and enjoy the fortnight of decent weather you will hopefully be getting.
