We wanted to visit the nearby shopping mall and bumped into our driver who had collected us from the station in the hotel foyer. He said no problem and took us down the road to his mate who was gunning his rickshaw.
I asked him how much and he quickly said INR 200. I literally laughed out loud and reminded him that only yesterday he said the mall was just 1.5 km away. He then said that was for a return trip (funny, I had made it clear we only wanted one way, I hate arranging times as you never know when you'll be finished) and dropped the price by half. I still wasn't convinced bur we accepted and we were off.
It didn't take long, we paid and left the driver grumbling over his lack of tip.
On the way home we picked a rickshaw at random and again asked how much.
"50 Rupees, sir" came the reply, without haggling or fuss.
That'll be the last time we use "our driver" again. It's not the cash, it's being taken for a ride (literally) that churns my chapatis.
