Mens 3 vs Havering 3 Lost 4-0
‘Man Of The Match is Nick Sills’ said Clarky who was counting the votes ‘and the winner of the JOS is Armi’. I was talking to my old mate Jonners at the time and was taking no notice of Clarky apart from the result. I was further distracted by the huge mound of freshly cooked chips from Harry Ramsdens that had appeared for teas. Armi winning the JOS is not unusual in itself so I thought no more of it and continued to let Jonners tell me how well they had played in turning us over 4-0. Nice!
On our way home the conversation turned to the game and Armi began to read out a list of people who he felt were much better candidates for the JOS. Like Giles for scoring a scorching own goal or Mark Williams for lasting 5 minutes or the reverend Rich Shorter for his pre match sermon or me because I always get a vote or two. In fact, he could not see any reason why he should have got any votes at all. He did let in four goals but none were disastrous and there really were better candidates. Never mind, these things happen.
The game really was a disappointment against a team who we would have beaten most other weeks of the season. We had some different players than usual (thanks to all those who turned out) but everyone acquitted themselves well. We could just not get it together as a team. Mark Williams showed real promise for 5 minutes and then went off injured allowing Rich Shorter on to the pitch for his first game in a year – it did not look like he had been away and he got a couple of MOM votes. Nick Sills was MOM playing at centre midfield and did well to bring Luke Fraser and debutant Finlay Milner into the game.
I got an e-mail on Monday from Armi who had been transposing the voting on to his grand totals for the season. (This statistical analysis is a little sad but allegedly this is something I may have done in the past). Turns out he had only got one vote and Jello had triumphed for his quality own goal. He alleged that Jello had purchased Clarky a couple of beers to get number dislecsik and read out the wrong result. Probably the best stitch up of all time!
Moral of the story – concentrate on the reading of the votes and not on the huge pile of chips.
