Adding to the previous post, here is what we do to keep risks down to a minimum when landing in a foreign country for the first time:
- Change up what ever cash you have left from the current currency you are using to the new one you will be arriving at (so this time it will be Indian Rupees {INR} to Sri Lankan Rupees {LNR})
- It's better to exchange in the country you are in than on arrival as you'll get better rates. Alternatively, if they are unable to offer you currency of your destination, opt for American dollars. Euros and pounds are OK too, but the Yankee buck is far more readily available.
- Ensure you get small notes too. They won't offer them until you ask/demand, but persist as you can't do much with a US$100 for a US$10 cab fare or can of Coke. You may have to pay more for smaller bills but don't be tight, it's well worth it
- Split cash up between pockets and evenly between yourselves. Keep some smaller bills to hand to avoid flashing your wedge to prying eyes.
- Do NOT pat your pocket when seeing a sign reminding you that pickpockets operate in the area. This is simply showing them where you keep your purse/wallet.
- Don't look like a target. Walk with determination, don't peer at a map or look helpless- even if you may be.
- It's worth the extra cash to arrange a pick up from the arrival point as the driver will know your destination, there is no haggling about the price and you can relax as they will not try to take you elsewhere. taxi drivers are all conmen (or worse), and will always try to stripe you.
- Keep ATM and credit cards separately in your wallet/purse and back and away from your passport.
- Some people keep a dummy wallet with a few quid and old cards in it. It's not something we've done, but it could prove useful.
- Keep your bags locked at all times- not just to keep inquisitive hands out but to also prevent stuff being put into your luggage.
- Above all, keep an eye on each other and always try to leave airports and train/bus stations as soon as you can; do not hang around unnecessarily.
