While we were sitting outside supping our Dagon beers, a friendly rickshaw driver tried to offer us a ride. We politely declined and instead offered him a seat and a beer. He didn't take a drink (turned out he was fasting for Ramadan and so the timing was not good for him) but we started chatting and his wife joined us for a while.
She's a primary school teacher* and said she earns Ks 500 a day (35 pence) but they were happy and we really enjoyed their company and our conversation. They even tried to teach us some useful phrases when asking for food and I think wifey wrote them down, so she should be able to order a vegetarian meal now without the threat of dead animals in her scoff.
*Prior to becoming a teacher she worked in a call centre and was paid three times as much. Go figure.
