Employees who think they are doing their bosses a favour by not taking a lunch break are actually costing business nearly £50 million a day, a study shows.
More than six million workers do not take a lunch hour, with 34% saying that this is due to pressure from managers and half saying they have too much work to do. Almost half (48%) say their productivity dips at about 15:00 if they have not had a break from their desk, leading to almost 40 minutes of lost working time, equating to £50 million day.
One in five said that taking no lunch break makes them irritable and stressed, and research shows that working 10 or 11 hour days can increase the risk of health problems, including heart disease. Caffeine and sweets add to the problem and can cause insomnia and dehydration.
