British holidaymakers’ reputation as being big boozers has been confirmed by new research, after as many as two thirds of sunseekers admit to drinking more while on holiday than at home. In comparison, only about two fifths of other Europeans said they let their hair down more away from home.
Almost a third of Britons drink five or more alcoholic drinks a day while on holiday, compared with one in ten continentals, the poll for TripAdvisor found. Based on responses from 6,000 holidaymakers from Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, the survey also revealed:

- Britons are least likely to smoke more when away, with Italians being the heaviest on-holiday smokers
- Nine in ten of Britons are "careful" or "very careful" about putting on sun cream
- One in ten French holidaymakers admit to not being at all careful about putting on sun tan lotion
- On a score of one to five, with one being the unhealthiest and five the healthiest, Britons were ranked three for their holiday habits, with Italians the least healthy and Spaniards the most
