Thamada Hotel

Much better than we expected with huge rooms, out-dated furniture and a fabulous view of the city.  Everything works and we have plenty of space, a fridge, TV (including TAN, the Asian news channel in English and the odd English speaking filum on the local channels), plenty of hot water for the shower/bath combo, great air con and a really central location.  The train station is just across the road and we have shops, food paces and plenty to see around the neighbourhood.

The bed is small (compared to Thai beds they are all small) and akin to an English B & B example; lumpy, dodgy springs and bowed in the middle.  At least the pillows are flat and we got an extra couple so we are sleeping fine.

We are happy with the room and price (US$ 27) that we have booked up another three nights before we fly off to the Philippines, but the cost goes up if you book at Reception.  They wanted US$ 35/night (includes taxes- everywhere advertises nett and it's usual to add 20% on top, 10% for government tax and another 10% service charge) so we went to a travel agent around the corner and got the same room for US$ 30/night!

It's the same for Mandalay- we have saved a packet on using an agent than paying the hotel directly.  How mental is that?
