I like the City River's policy on Housekeeping.
They will come in to clean and tidy on a daily basis but if you're a long termer (and the "Do Not Disturb" sign is not on the door), they will only replace bed linen once every four days or if you leave a note on the bed asking to them specifically to do so.
Equally with the towels (although most hotels do this)- leave them on the floor to replace or hang up if OK.
Sensible.
