Research by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has revealed that British employees take an average of ten unscheduled days leave each year, compared to 5.5 in the US and 4.5 in Asia. The British figure isn’t too out of step with the rest of Europe, however, with the rest of the continent taking an average of 9.7 unscheduled days off per year.
Using the average UK salary of £25 000, they calculated that British businesses are currently having to shell out £32 billion in lost productivity as a result of the days off. Of the unscheduled days off by British workers, 80% is said to be down to sick days, with jury service and compassionate leave making up the rest.
