About Time

Ahead of the biggest crackdown on abuses of the welfare system in a generation, the Minister for Employment, has vowed to "end benefits culture" once and for all and to help get healthy people back to work.

He said pilot studies had showed that half a million people were likely to be found fit for work when the three-year nationwide drive begins tomorrow (Monday), with another 600 000 of the 1.6 million who will be tested are estimated to be able to find work "with the right support".

The crackdown, seen by many as the most ambitious drive for reform of the welfare system undertaken for decades, will see up to 10 000 people "reassessed" every week, with a process that can involve tough new medical tests.
