A universal pension of £155 per week is expected to be unveiled by the Government next week, but it will only be available to new pensioners. It is understood that the pensions minister will confirm the flat rate as part of the Government’s radical reforms of the current system. It could be introduced as early as 2015.
The Work and Pensions Secretary, had indicated that the figure would be £140, however, the new universal pension is unlikely to come in for at least four years, so with inflation added it would rise above £150.
The existing system pays a basic state pension of £97.65 per week for a single person or £156.15 for a couple. This can be topped by with additional means-tested benefits, such as the pension credit. The Government intends to scrap these different tiers by introducing the flat rate.
